Running Tips: Getting Started

Going for your first run can be harder than running a marathon (more on that later). Here are a few things to try during those first runs:

Pre-Run
  • Pick the day in advance based on the weather.
  • Pick a time and duration that works with your personal schedule.
    • If you’re not a morning person, then don’t run in the morning!
    • If you don’t feel like you have the time, aim to do 10 minutes. I know you can find 10 minutes.
  • Choose your outfit, including shoes, the day before and put them in a place where you can see them.
  • Find a friend who will motivate you to run.  Maybe it’s a friend who also wants to start running, your partner, or your marathon obsessed sister in law - just make sure it’s positive motivation not negative pressure.
  • If you’re running outside or a treadmill that’s not in your house, bring your cell phone, keys, ID, and cash.  Cell phone will ideally go in a large zip pocket or a running cell phone case.  ID and cash can go in a Baggie, and the Baggie and keys can be tucked into a small zip pocket.
During Run
  • Set a goal based on time, not mileage.
  • Walk breaks are perfectly acceptable.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, in particular of traffic, especially if you are listening to music or talking to your running buddy.
Post-Run
  • High five a million angels because you are awesome
